On Thursday evening at the Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris a masked intruder stole a Picasso, a Matisse and three other masterpieces from the museum, in what is being called the world’s largest art heist, reports Art Daily. The perpetrator stole the five paintings, which have an estimated value of $123 million, by taking advantage of the museum’s faulty security system — he simply clipped a padlock, smashed a window and left after 15 minutes according to a police official.
The alarm system of the museum had apparently been broken since March, confirmed Paris’ mayor Bertrand Delanoe. The Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris reopened in 2006 after spending $18 million and two years upgrading its security system. However, spare parts had been ordered to fix the alarm but had not yet arrived, said Delanoe in a statement.
The stolen works include: Pablo Picasso’s Le pigeon aux petits-pois,![]()
Henri Matisse’s La Pastorale, Amedeo Modigliani’s La femme a l’eventail, Georges Braque’s L’olivier pres de l’Estaque, and Fernand Leger’s Nature morte aux chandeliers.
